Clean Up Australia Day 2021

What you can do to help #CleanUpAustralia

Clean Up Australia Day 2021 has launched a few days ago with a call to #StepUpToCleanUp. As Outdoor Cleaning Specialists is in the cleaning services industry in Sydney, we want to do our part by spreading awareness about this very important environment issue. We recognise that there might be limitations to how we mobilise ourselves during the pandemic, but there is still a lot we can do to get involved with Clean Up Australia.

As an individual, family or community

Cleaning up the country is a daunting feat, but as an individual, group of friends and family, or even as a community, a lot can be accomplished. You can register online to create clean up events any day of the year, and Clean Up Australia will send you starter kits that include bags, gloves, and other equipment you might need for your clean up event.

You can also join a plog-a-thon in your local area to pick up litter around your neighborhood. This is a socially responsible way to clean up your area and get fit in the process. Just remember to wear a mask, social distance, and bring a sanitiser and you’ll be making a great impact to your local surroundings.

If you’re involved in a sports group or facility, you can also join the Greening the Green initiative, where you manage plastic waste in your facility, which eventually gets repurposed into benches and other materials that can benefit your space. It’s an excellent way to get your community moving to not only collect plastics, but also to recycle them and give them a sustainable new life in your sports center.

As a business or school

Same as small communities, your business or office can mount clean up events to get more people involved. You can use these events as educational team-building activities that have a positive impact on your environment. Your company could also partner with Clean Up Australia to teach everyone in your staff about cleaning and recycling awareness, and what they can do to volunteer their efforts in keeping Australia clean.

Remotely, your company can be an advocacy or donation partner, or event sponsor if you are more inclined to raise funds for Clean Up Australia. This might be a more prudent option for companies whose staff are working from home.

The same activities are available for schools. Awareness programs are a great way for young students to learn about their active role in keeping their schools clean and sustainable. Clean Up Australia also has practical lesson plans available on their website to help teachers reinforce what they can do to manage waste, water and energy.

Clean Up Australia resources

Clean Up Australia has a very helpful resources page where you can access materials, fact sheets, FAQs, reports, tips on living green, and more. These are perfect for schools, offices, and even at home for everyone to have a deep understanding of the environmental issues in Australia and the rest of the world.
